80 years of ICAO: Contribution to global and Kyrgyz civil aviation

On December 7, 2024, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) celebrated its 80th anniversary. Over the years, it has become a key link in ensuring the safety and development of aviation worldwide.

What is ICAO?

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, established on the basis of the Chicago Convention, signed on December 7, 1944. The Convention entered into force on April 4, 1947.

The main goal of ICAO is to establish international standards and norms for civil aviation, ensure the safe and effective development of the aviation industry, and coordinate the efforts of the participating countries.

The history of ICAO

ICAO was established during the period of active development of air transport after World War II, which required international regulation of the aviation industry.

The Chicago Convention laid the legal and organizational foundations of international air navigation, establishing the rights and obligations of States in the field of air transport.

Throughout its history, ICAO has developed key safety standards, promoted infrastructure development, and supported innovation in aviation.

ICAO today

Today, ICAO unites 193 States and continues to play a leading role in global civil aviation.

Key areas of work:

  • Development of standards and recommendations on flight safety and sustainability.
  • Promoting the effective development of aviation infrastructure.
  • Work on minimizing the environmental impact of aviation.

The future of ICAO

The 42nd session of the ICAO Assembly will be held in 2025, where important tasks will be discussed, including:

  • Achieving a zero level of aviation accidents.
  • Transition to carbon-neutral aviation by 2050.

ICAO's relationship with the civil aviation of the Kyrgyz Republic

The Kyrgyz Republic actively cooperates with ICAO in an effort to improve the safety and quality standards of its aviation system.

In 2024, an ICAO audit was conducted in Kyrgyzstan, which helped identify areas for improvement and compliance with international standards. As a result of the audit, recommendations were made on modernizing aviation regulations, including protecting information systems and improving flight safety.

In addition, the country is taking steps to exit the "black list" of the European Union. Compliance with ICAO standards will allow Kyrgyz airlines to expand international routes and regain the trust of passengers.

The 80th anniversary of ICAO is an occasion to celebrate the importance of this organization for global aviation. Kyrgyzstan, like other participating countries, continues to use the international experience and support of ICAO to develop a safe and efficient aviation system.
